Implant Removal: Understanding Your Options

Dental implants are renowned for their high success rates, closely mimicking the function of natural teeth. However, there are instances where an implant may fail. Common reasons for failure include gum disease leading to bone loss around the implant or excessive bite pressure that can overload the implant.

To minimise the risk of complications, it’s essential to maintain excellent oral hygiene at home and schedule regular professional cleanings with our hygienist. Avoiding smoking, managing your overall health, and maintaining good control of diabetes are also crucial. If you have a tendency to clench or grind your teeth, we recommend using a night guard. Additionally, any existing bite issues should ideally be assessed and addressed before placing the implant crown.

In many cases, we can preserve the health of a failing implant through targeted hygiene treatments provided by our hygienist or periodontist. If necessary, our periodontist may recommend grafting to restore lost bone or gum volume.

In unfortunate cases where bone loss advances or the implant fractures, we have the experience and expertise needed to safely remove the implant. If the removal is performed before the surrounding issues become too severe, a new implant can often be placed immediately or just 6-8 weeks later.

If you’re experiencing any issues with your dental implant, please contact us as soon as possible. Early intervention can help prevent the need for removal. However, if removal and replacement are necessary, our dedicated team is here to support you every step of the way.
