Upper First Molar Dental Implant with Sinus Graft & PRF (Before & After)
Meet one of our lovely patients who presented with a failing upper left first molar (UL6). The tooth had gum disease, advanced bone loss, and significant gum recession, making it non-restorable. The tooth required extraction, and our patient wanted a fixed replacement so he could continue enjoying the meals he loves.
Why a Dental Implant Was the Best Fixed Option
- Single-tooth implant-supported restoration is the only truly fixed solution for replacing a molar
- With advanced bone loss, the implant site needed additional bone support
- A sinus graft (sinus lift) was required to rebuild sufficient bone height in the upper back jaw
What Is a Sinus Graft (and Why It Matters)?
A sinus graft involves carefully accessing the sinus area and placing bone graft material. Because of the delicate anatomy in this region, the procedure must be performed with precision and careful planning—our experienced specialist surgeons undertake sinus grafting at Smile Dental Implants.
Our Treatment Plan (Stages)
Stage 1: Extraction + Sinus graft with PRF
- UL6 extracted
- After 6 weeks a Sinus graft performed to rebuild the missing bone
- PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin) was mixed with the graft to support healing and help accelerate maturation of the graft into usable bone
Stage 2: Implant placement
- After approximately 6 months, the graft has matured
- Where there was once a void, there is now solid, hard bone to support an implant
- The dental implant is placed securely into the grafted bone
Stage 3: Crown restoration
- Healing period of around 4 months to allow osseointegration
- Digital scan taken
- A custom zirconia crown designed and manufactured by a specialist dental laboratory
- Crown fitted to restore bite function and natural aesthetics
Outcome
As shown in the before-and-after photos and xrays, the patient now has:
- A stable, fixed dental implant tooth
- The ability to bite comfortably and enjoy meals without discomfort
- Confidence after moving away from a failing, infected, mobile tooth that had been affecting day-to-day life
